Internet Portals
Portals are designed to be gateways to the Internet. They may have a link to a search engine, a
subject directory, and provide other services such as news, weather, entertainment information,
stock market information, shopping, and other services. Many portal sites provide an option to
customize the site according to the user's personal interest. Portals are sponsored by the major
search engine and browser providers, and may include alliances with other major players on the
Internet.
- Canada.Com
- This Canadian portal has a search engine, free e-mail, news, weather, stock market information,
and shopping.
- Excite
- Excite has a search engine, subject directory, and links to other search and shopping sites.
You can design a personalized page which includes news, sports, weather, stocks etc. Free e-mail is
available.
- Go
- Go is combination of ABC, ESPN, and other Disney enterpises. Go puts the emphasis on leisure, recreation, and entertainment.
- iWon
- IWon provides the same services as all the other major portals except that you can win cash for
using it. This site is owned in part by CBS. Search results provided by Google.
- MSN.COM
- Microsoft's portal. This site offers many of the standard services including free e-mail. It
offers a good selection of items from which to create your own personalized page.
- Netscape - AOL
- News, pop culture, and search with Google. Also information on weather, entertainment
and money.
- Yahoo!
- Yahoo offers news, weather, stock market information, etc. Search Yahoo's web directory. Yahoo
has some very nice features for designing your personalized page including News Clipper for keeping
up with the news about the topics you are interested in. Free e-mail.
- Arts Journal
- News of the world of music, theatre, dance, publishing and the visual arts.
- CNN
- If you are a news addict, the CNN site might be the portal for you. You can designed your own
personalized news page with the news topics of interest to you.
- Google News
- Very comprehensive coverage of world news.
- ZDNet
- This is a portal for the computer user with links to news, shopping sites, software downloads,
computer information and how-to's, and investor information.
- Start Spot
- This is the launch page for the specialized portals BookSpot, Cinema Spot, EmploymentSpot,
GovSpot, Headline Spot, Homework Spot, Library Spot, Museum Spot, People Spot, and
Travel Spot.
