A Short Introduction

Individual Search Engines are used to search for a subject by entering a word or words describing that subject. These search engines will return a list of web sites related to that subject. Meta-Search Engines allow a search to be submitted to several search engines at the same time.

Subject Indexes are for those searchers who know the topics that they are looking for and want to browse through lists of subjects related to these topics. Internet Portals are hybrids containing links to both search engines and subject directories. Kid Safe Search Sites are directories and search engines which have been screened or filtered to remove objectionable content.

Specialized Subject Indexes and Search Engines are search engines and directories for one particular topic such as movies, medicine or government information.

All-in-One Search Pages contain forms which let you submit your search terms to search engines and directories individually from that search page without having to travel to the web site of each search engine.

International Search Engines and Subject Indexes are those which are located in countries other than the United States. These engines and indexes usually are restricted to searching for information within a single country or region.

Links to More Information contains links to search engine news, lists of search engines, and information on how to use search engines effectively.
